Growing your own Zucchini plant in containers.
Planting seeds to grow your own zucchinis can be a whole lot of fun. I love watching the seeds sprout as they unravel and reveal the makings of a new plant. It is so exciting when they reach the four leaf stage, because you know it’s time to plant them out and watch them grow.
Growing Zucchini plants in containers can achieve the same results as if they were planted in the garden. They fruit abundantly but require a little more maintenance. Zucchini plants are very top heavy when grown in pots and require staking for support. The weight is usually due to the size of the leaves and the weight of the fruit which can pull the plant over. I’ve found that one decent size stake and an old stocking tied to the plant secures it nicely.
My Zucchini plants have been flowering for weeks now and I have been waiting patiently for the fruit to grow. So you can imagine how excited I was yesterday, I picked my first Zucchini. Yippee! Gee it feels good reaping what you sow and lets not forget it’s fresh and pesticide free.
So for dinner last night I sliced the Zucchini thinly and it was firm to cut unlike it’s cousin in the supermarket. In the pan I added a knob of butter some cumin and thyme and browned off the Zucchini slices slightly. The Zucchini tasted soooo delicious alongside the marinated steak and chips.
Tip: Just make sure to pick the Zucchini when it is between 4-6 inches in length so they are nice and tender. If you want to experiment with a few to see how big they grow go right ahead. When picked, if you’re stuck for ideas, try scooping out the centre and fill them with a stuffing and bake them.
Zucchini are a great addition to the garden and can provide the family with a staple green in the Summer months. Never shy at saving money and improving your family’s health. Grow green and eat clean.
